| Stepping Stones is a program designed and implemented by Old Town Christian Ministries, a 501(c)(3) non-profit that was founded in 1980. Using net proceeds from its thrift store at 901 West Holly, in-kind donations, and community grants, Stepping Stones places individuals, couples and families in local motels. Although 7 nights may not seem like a very long time, but it provides clients with essential tools for obtaining employment-a phone number, shower, place to change, and a bed to get much-needed rest. Whether clients are seeking jobs, shelter from the cold, or safety from a domestic violence situation, Stepping Stones provides them with an opportunity to begin re-building their lives.
In addition to temporary motel stays, OTCM provides the homeless with clothing, shoes, blankets, sleeping bags and tents, when available. Thanks to support from YMCA and the Whatcom Transit Authority, OTCM is also able to distribute shower passes and some free bus ride tickets on a per month basis.
During 2004, 137 individuals were provided with motel stays, totaling 884 bednights. Unfortunately, OTCM was forced to turn away 540 individuals, primarily due to lack of funding.
